Are Hayden and Philander Experienced Enough to Coach Pakistan?

Right after becoming the chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board, Ramiz Raja in his first Press Conference as Chairman PCB announced the appointment of two new consultant coaches. Pakistan appointed former Australian opening batsman, Matthew Hayden and South African Fast Bowler, Vernon Philander as their consultant coaches for World T20 2021. The decision was made after the previous management of Misbah-Ul-Haq and Waqar Younis resigned prior to the mega event. Who will be the Head Coach of Pakistan is still a question unanswered, but for now let us have a closer look on the 2 consultant coaches that have been hired by Pakistan for the World T20 2021.

Matthew Hayden:

As a player, there is no doubt on the credentials of Matthew Hayden. He is a former No.1 ranked batsman in all 3 formats of the game. Hayden represented Australia in over 250 International Games. He featured in just 9 T20Is for Australia, but he had an astonishing average of 51 with a tremendous strike rate of 143.92. Hayden was inducted in Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2017. However it is not necessary that all good players can coach well. Matthew Hayden has no relevant coaching experience at all. Become Pakistan’s batting consultant coach is Hayden’s first major coaching assignment.

Vernon Philander:

Vernon Philander featured in over 100 games for South Africa. He is a former No.1 ranked Test Bowler as well, but he played just 7 T20I games for South Africa. Overall he played 123 T20 games in his career and took 92 wickets. The right handed pacer also has no coaching experience at all. He retired from international cricket just a couple of years ago. Same as Hayden, this is the first major coaching assignment of Vernon Philander.

Misbah-Ul-Haq received huge criticism for not having relevant coaching experience, but it looks like Pakistan are repeating the same mistake again. Nevertheless the appointments of Vernon Philander and Matthew Hayden are just for the World T20 beginning in October this year. Only time will tell whether it is a good decision or not.
