PCB Faces Challenges in scheduling of PSL 2022

The Pakistan Cricket Board is once again facing some challenges related to the country’s Premier T20 League. Managing PSL 6 was already a hectic task for the PCB officials due to Covid-19, and now weeks after the conclusion of PSL 6, the PCB is already facing challenges regarding the schedule of PSL 2022.

Ever since the inaugural season of PSL, the tournament is played during the February-March window. However in 2022 Pakistan will be facing some major issues during this period. Australian Cricket Team is most likely to tour Pakistan in this window and hence there will be problems in scheduling PSL 2022. Although PSL is the premier T20 Tournament of Pakistan, but the importance of Australia’s tour of Pakistan is far greater.

The PCB has a window available during 25th December to February 15th but top 5 teams have a busy schedule in that phase and hence foreign participation in the league could be affected largely. Another problem with this window is lack of venues, as only National Stadium Karachi will be clear to host the PSL Matches in this window. Rest of the stadiums will experience fog.

The only suitable window seems to be April-May 2022. It is preferable because of better weather conditions in Pakistan, and availability of foreign players as well. However Indian Premier League will also be played during the same window, so it will be interesting to see whether PCB opts for this window or not.

PSL 6 was completed in the month of June after the tournament was interrupted by Covid-19 outbreak. Having PSL in June proved to be good for PCB as many renowned stars showed their availability in this window. Cricketers from Australia especially were available in this window as their domestic season ends by this time. Having this April-May window has its pros and cons. The pros are that top international sides aren’t that busy and hence good players could be available however IPL would be played in the same window and hence we could see majority of International Stars preferring the IPL over PSL.
